The allure of Everest
I think all of us (by that I mean at least me) in the outdoor world have at one time or another been fascinated or contemplated climbing Everest. I mean, if a blind man (granted a very athletic, gifted, amazingly fit blind man) can get up, can't we?
After all, most climbers describe Everest as a comparably easy mountain, no serious rock faces to get over, just cold and elevation. I admit, at one time I wanted to climb Everest. A buddy of mine went to base camp and came back with all of these amazing stories to tell. Because of that whenever I see or hear about Everest documentaries I am immediately drawn in.
Tuesday night I was downstairs working as usual, and my wife comes down talking about a PBS documentary on the TV. It was David Breashears take on the 1996 disaster. Fascinating, fascinating stuff, well worth watching and reading about.
Oh, and after reading Into Thin Air, watching the Imax movie Everest, watching this documentary, and having two kids and a family to take care of, I no longer am interested in climbing it. Call me a wuss.
